A self-driving Google car, a modified Lexus SUV carrying out testing on the roads near the company’s Mountain View headquarters in California was involved in yet another major accident in the United States.
The car was struck by a van that went through a red light and collided into its passenger side on Sunday. No one was hurt and the airbags deployed in the Google vehicle. Preliminary investigations have attributed the accident to human error, although there is no official word yet.
The Google car was badly damaged and had to be towed away from the site of the crash. Google’s self-driving vehicles have been involved in nearly a dozen collisions in or around Mountain View since the company started to test on city streets in the spring of 2014.
Other manufacturers of self-driving vehicles have had their share of crashes – some of them fatal, including Tesla.
